How to Convert a Porch to a 3 Season Porch
|
 |
 |
Design & Layout Considerations
|
 |
|
Our custom screen doors and porch
panels can also be used to convert an existing open air porch to a
versatile 3
season porch. When deciding how to divide the space on the porch into framed
openings, consider these factors:
-
Keeping the variation in sizes to a minimum will not only make it
much easier to remove, replace and store the screens and storms, it
will also minimize manufacturing, packaging and shipping costs.
-
Panel widths of three feet or less will have screens and storms
that are more manageable to remove, replace and store than panels that
are four feet wide.
-
For a more finished look, you may want to consider a design in
which our panels are mounted above a knee wall.
-
Consider dividing a floor to ceiling opening with a transom-sized
unit above a door-sized unit below.
-
When deciding how to size and place doors, carefully consider
whether you will ever need to move any furniture or appliances in or
out of those openings. A pair of double doors may be preferable.
-
If you are planning to install your porch panels in the way that we
have illustrated (“floating” between an inner and outer perimeter of
fixed moulding or trim) then size the units to easily fit the opening
with no force or trimming, such as 1/4” less the width and length of
the opening.

An Example of a Porch Renovation Plan
|
 |
|
The plan suggested here works within the footprint of the existing porch,
and keeps in harmony with the façade and character of this Midwestern
home. It not only complements and blends with the
architectural design elements of the house,
but it also adds a new, deep ledge, perfect for plants, drinks and the
lucky kitties who will also be enjoying this new space. |

Project Cost: This project, as planned, would include 12
porch panels, a pair of double doors with quality hardware, all units
with a routed bead, primed and complete with interchangeable screens and
tempered glass storms and would price out around $6500. This would not include the on-site labor and materials
for framing and installation or the motor freight charges. |
